The Horizon Hydrogen Grand Prix (H2GP) returns to Townsville North Queensland in 2026 for its second year — and the momentum is building.

As one of the world’s leading hydrogen STEM programs, operating in more than 25 countries, H2GP is more than a racing series. It’s a global movement shaping the next generation of engineers, innovators and clean energy leaders.

Over eight months, student teams design, build and race their own hydrogen-powered cars while exploring the science behind renewable energy, hydrogen technology, power generation, energy storage and electric mobility. Guided by a purpose-built curriculum, students gain hands-on experience with 3D modelling and printing, CNC machining, laser cutting, coding, electromechanical systems and data analysis — building real-world, future-ready skills along the way.

In 2025, the winning Townsville team earned the opportunity to represent the region on the world stage in Germany — a powerful reminder of what’s possible when education meets industry. In 2026, teams will once again compete for the chance to qualify for the 2027 World Finals.

It’s incredibly exciting for Townsville North Queensland to host the Hydrogen Grand Prix again, reinforcing our region’s growing reputation as a clean energy and future fuels powerhouse. Programs like H2GP don’t just inspire students — they help secure the workforce and leadership needed to power the green energy transition right here in our region.

The program is delivered by Horizon Educational, in partnership with NQh2.
